There is an urgent need to build capacity in protected areas to monitor, assess, manage and report the effects of climate change and their interaction with other pressures. The contributors identify barriers to the adaptation of conservation management, such as the mismatch between planning reality and the decision context at site level. How to manage areas protected for conservation brings up a range of challenges - whether it be regarding the local population, specific ecosystems or the design of the reserve itself - and because of the many unpredicatable elements in ecology issues, each protected area requires a case-specific set of guidelines.. Enforcing protected area boundaries is a costly and labour-heavy endeavour.

The enlisting of such areas is part of a strategy being used toward the conservation of the world's natural environment and biodiversity.

Protected areas are regions or zones of land or sea that are reserved for purposes of conserving nature and biodiversity. These areas serve a broad range of functions including scientific research, protection of wilderness, preservation of biodiversity and species protection, safeguarding environmental services such as watersheds, maintenance of specific cultural sites and natural features. The establishment of protected areas remains to be the most important policy instrument to deal with this challenge. However, the conventional state-based approaches to manage protected areas have often failed to balance the goal of nature conservation with the goal of improving the livelihood of the local by: 1.

It focuses on better practices for conserving inland aquatic ecosystems in protected areas, including rivers, wetlands, peatlands, other freshwater and brackish ecosystems, and estuaries.
